The teaser trailer for Shrek 5 is officially out! If you grew up in the early 2010s, chances are you watched the iconic Shrek movie—because it was everywhere! For us, Gen Z, it is one of our favorite animated films of all time! The Shrek franchise is more than just a slapstick comedy film; it’s a cultural moment. Who would have thought that a movie featuring a grumpy green ogre with a heart of gold, a talking donkey with zero chill, and a princess who can throw hands would become an all-time favorite? At Style Spur, we are avid fans of the Shrek movies, and we are just as excited as you are! We’re ready to scream, “Somebody once told me…” at full volume and relive the chaos all over again! However, the teaser has received quite the backlash for the redesigns of the iconic characters such as Shrek, Fiona, their daughter Meechee, and Donkey.
Let’s take a closer look at why longtime fans are mad about the teaser and confirmation of the release date on Christmas 2026. We are also going to discuss Zendaya’s role in the new movie and her thoughts on joining the OG cast for Shrek 5.
Shrek 5 teaser trailer was released on Thursday 27, and it has already racked up 4.6 million views on YouTube! The OG cast is back with Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey. In the trailer, we saw the trio interacting with a magic mirror that has a TikTok-inspired twist and swaps between various Gen Z-ified versions of Shrek when Donkey asks, “Hey Magic Mirror, who’s the fairest of them all?”. Yikes! This gets a candid reaction from Fiona (“Oooh, Mommy like”) and their daughter Meechee (“Ew, dad!”). You have to check out the trailer to check the interaction yourself!
Before we give you the deeds on Shrek 5, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and revisit the iconic movies in the franchise. These movies have everything from comedy to an awesome soundtrack and meme-worthy moments!
Once upon in a swamp far, far away, we meet Shrek—a green ogre who only wished to live in peace on his swamp. However, everything goes south when thanks to Lord Farquaad, who decides to outlaw every magical creature in the kingdom. So, where do they go to hide from Lord Farquaad’s army? To a secluded swamp owned by a mean ogre, of course! Now, Shrek gets involved in a fairy-tale mess and teams up with a loud-mouth Donkey to save a princess from a tower and get his swamp back from Lord Farquaad. However, along the way, Shrek falls for the fabulous and fierce Princess Fiona, who has a secret of her own. The result is an iconic movie that flipped the age-old romantic fairy tale script and made Shrek, the ogre, the hero of the story who gets the girl!
Many fans agree that Shrek 2 is the best sequel out there, and we agree! In this movie, Shrek meets his in-laws after marrying Fiona, which is quite awkward for him. He then gets a magical glow up and fights a very dramatic Fairy Godmother while Puss in Boots steals the show with his iconic pleading eyes!
Even though we loved Shrek 2, we can’t say the same for Shrek 3. In this movie, we saw Shrek stressed out about fatherhood, a young King Arthur, and Prince Charming as the villain of this story. It wasn’t exactly bad; however, it was the best movie in the franchise either.
In this movie, we saw Shrek make a what if deal with Rumpelstiltskin, who turns his wish into a nightmare. The whole reason why Skrek even asks for the wish is because he is stressed out from being a dad and we get it, parenthood is not easy. This movie showed an emotional aspect of Skrek and his appreciation for his life (sniff), an army of ogres, and Fiona in full warrior mode. When the movie ended, we thought that was the end of Shrek and we were saying farewell to the swamp. However, we couldn’t have been more wrong as DreamWorks had other plans!
Due to the redesign of Shrek 5, many fans are not happy. When the teaser trailer dropped on major DreamWorks social platforms, there was major backlash. Longtime fans are definitely not happy with the teaser trailer, and they are quite vocal about it on X (Twitter). Some fans are comparing the new redesigns with the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog movie backlash, and others are saying that the teaser looks like it was an AI interpretation of how Shrek 5 should look like!
Unfortunately, the wannabe king met his demise in Shrek 1. So, we probably won’t be seeing him in Shrek 5, but could he be making a dramatic back? The internet is buzzing with who will be the new villain in Shrek 5, and let’s be honest—if anyone is petty enough to come back from the dead just to mess with Shrek, it would be Lord Farquaad!
In the Shrek 5 teaser trailer, we saw Shrek and Fiona’s cool teenage daughter Princess Felicia. Zendaya will be voicing her. Hope this clears up the confusion about the “Zendaya is Meechee” meme in Shrek 5! Zendaya did voice another character called Meechee in Smallfoot, an animated film released in 2018. Although DreamWorks hasn’t disclosed the entirety of her role in the movie, she is definitely part of Shrek 5. We might even see Princess Felicia accompanied by her siblings in the new movie! We can’t wait to see them together on the big screen.
We have been waiting for Shrek 5 for over 15 years now! Shrek 5 will release on the big screens on December 23, 2026. Therefore, you have more than enough time to rewatch the entire franchise, twice!
Shrek 5 is going to be epic and we simply cannot wait for its premier. Although, fans are divided about the redesigns, one thing’s for sure—when Shrek 5 finally drops in 2026, it’s going to be ogre-the-top amazing! At Style Spur, we have marked our calender and are counting down the days to its release. So, bookmark this blog to get the latest updates about Shrek 5!
